Dear Colleagues,=20

A week ago=C2=A0the list=C2=A0received news about the financial cuts in Aus=
tria concerning the ESI and many other research institutes. An online petit=
ion has been created to collect signatures (it takes a few minutes to load,=
 because=C2=A0nearly 14 ,000 people have already signed).=20

http://wissenschaft.research.at/=20

If you click on the very last line on the page, you can add your signature.=
 The statement essentially says that=20

funding has been cut to zero for all scientific institutes which do not bel=
ong to the federal or state governments in Austria. The goals of the petiti=
on are to demonstrate the contributions of the scientific institutions for =
Austria, to show the dramatic consequences of such a reduction to zero, to =
guarantee public pressure in the budget process, and to support those membe=
rs of the federal government and parliament who want to retain this diversi=
ty in the scientific system.=20

Best regards,=20

Dear Colleague,

On Monday, October 25, 2010, the Erwin Schroedinger Institute (ESI) was
informed -- without prior warning -- that its funding by the Austrian
Ministry of Science will be terminated with effect from January 1, 2011.

The reason given for this decision was a 'radical structural change in the
consolidation of Austrian extrauniversity research', apparently affecting
more than 100 scientific institutions in Austria.

As it stands, this decision means that the ESI will have to terminate its
activities in early 2011.

It may not be too late to reverse this step, but time is running short.

If you wish to express support for continued funding (and, indeed,
existence) of the ESI we ask you to communicate urgently your views to the
minister responsible:

Dr. Beatrix Karl
Federal Minister of Science and Research

Email: beatrix.karl at bmwf.gv.at Yours sincerely,

Joachim Schwermer (Scientific Director, ESI)

Minoritenplatz 5, A-1014 Vienna
Telephone: +43 1 53 120-0

Yours sincerely,

Joachim Schwermer (Scientific Director, ESI)
Jakob Yngvason (Scientific Director, ESI)
Klaus Schmidt (President, ESI)
