The museum at Bletchley Park http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bletchley_Park
has a display about Max Newman and his "Newmanry" group.
One of the captions reads:

"Two or three people had a hard-backed edition of Newman's book "The
Topology of
Plane sets" which they dipped into during slack periods; what with Henry
Whitehead
and Newman around - oh, yes, Peter Hilton and Shaun Wylie also - topology
(like probability) permeated the atmosphere of the place."
